Centro Solar

El Centro Solar (the Solar Centre) is a focal point not just for Grupo Fenix, but the whole community. This complex, located on the Pan-American Highway, is the base of operations for Las Mujeres Solares de Totogalpa, Jóvenes Pedeando Hacia el Futuro, ACEsol PV workshop, as well as our administration team.

Restaurante Casita Solar

The Solar Restaurant, constructed in 2009, with the help of Hivos and UNDP is the home of Las Mujeres Solares de Totogalpa cooperative. The restaurant is fitted out with all of the clean cooking technologies which Las Mujeres promote. This includes solar cookers and dryers, improved efficiency wood stoves, an ecological oven, and also a bio-gas stove in the development phase. As well as serving up delicious food to visitors the restaurant provides a source employment for the members of the cooperative, and is also a place for the women to come together for meetings and social activities.

Taller Noble

The Noble Workshop, named in honour of the donor, the Andrew Noble Foundation, was completed in 2007 as a space to build solar cookers and house other activities of the organisation at the time. Since then this space has evolved to become our administrative base, home of the ACESol PV workshop, and a general space for meetings, trainings and other activities. Like the restaurant the building is constructed from improved adobe, and was built entirely by our members. To complete the building Las Mujeres made more than 5,000 adobes by hand and contributed 8,000 hours of voluntary work. The building is also completely off the grid, with power for lights, tools, computers etc provided by a 960 watt solar photovoltaic system.

Tesoro del Sol

Tesoro de Sol is an informal meeting and teaching space constructed in 2013. This is another triumph of our natural construction team and was built with adobes by our members and volunteers.

Organic Gardens

The organic gardens and orchard, provide fresh fruit and vegetables for sale and use in the restaurant during the growing season. Crops include papaya, passion fruit, squash, herbs, bananas as well as other seasonally variable items.

Montaña Solar

Montaña Solar

Montaña Solar (Solar Mountain), the home of the Agro-Ecological Solar Promoters (PSAE) and our founder Susan Kinne, is a 35 acre site in Sabana Grande, about three-quarters of which is mountainside. The land was purchased with a mandate to provide a space to show how humans can make a living while still putting more into the land than they take out of it. When purchased in 2006 the site was bare from extensive deforestation, hurricane damage, and exploitive farming practices. Today the site is a thriving oasis, with an operational farm employing organic practices, and extensive ongoing reforestation projects in the mountainous area.

The farm at solar mountain employs organic methods to produce coffee, corn, beans, and a wide variety of other fruits and vegetables as well as organic fertiliser and insecticide. A drip irrigation system supplied by the solar pumping system allows the work to continue year-round.

Aula Natural

The Natural Classroom, was constructed by the community in 2012 as part of a natural building course run by Liz Johndrow from Earthen Endevours and Nancy Bernstein.

We may be a little biased, but we think that this may be the most beautiful bathroom in all of Nicaragua. As well as being easy on the eye, this is a prototype for a new type of latrine that produces compost for the garden, while solving many other issues with the current latrines used in the community.

Casa de Susan

While this may be the private home of our passionate founder Susan, it is worth noting here for the fantastic facade created by our natural building team.
